Japanese Kites and Tops Festival June, Sunway Piramid

The beautie of art

I remembered this as my first time attended PPKTJ outside activities since I came to PPKTJ. I couldn’t really remembered when was the actual date but I guess it was on the end of the June 2003 and was held at one of the largest shopping center in Malaysia, Sunway Pyramid.

There, many unique and beautiful Japanese kites and tops were exhibited. Those kites and tops had been painted with magnificent and creative artwork. Seeing all those artworks which most of them with the theme ‘monster’ and ‘goddesses’, it shows how those thing had a big influence in Japanese life. To me, it was one of the unique criteria that differentiate between the Malaysian kites and the Japanese kites. Most of the Malaysian kites painted with the flowers theme or the small animal (like butterfly) theme.

Beside the exhibition, we had workshop on how to make the Japanese kite. We had been given tools to make the kite like paper (the type of paper to make the kite), colored pens, small bamboo, threads and needle. An instructor was there to guide us with the steps in making the kites and many helpful Japanese volunteers were also there to help us along the process.

The festival ended with a wonderful Japanese dance performance at around 3pm. Being given the opportunity to learn something new of other cultures, we went back to our ‘rio’ with satisfaction........ along with our beautiful self-made Japanese kite.
